EVALUATION:
The six months of stay serving the needy people at grass root level was
interesting, learning the real life of the people. Not only provided them
services but also learned from them some important practices that they apply
during delivery and other problems. We had patients for general check up, some
mothers came for their Antenatal visits and postnatal visits, mothers brought
their child for vaccinations, etc. The clients acted very normal without any
language problems. They shared all their problems without any hesitation.
Therefore, my set objectives were fully met
Mukporong Himal Primary School
During several visit to
Dolpo by our founder member, they found that it is most beautiful and remote
place of Nepal. Though there are many good government schools within the
district, still there are some such places where the modern education stands
far from the people due to several reasons. The people depend on a very low
productive agriculture and trades. Very unfortunately, children have to go to
pastures instead of school. They are major labor forces within their families.
Elders are busy to earn the family expenses and to transfer the traditional
education with is pastorals and only hold up their life.
Mukporong Himal Primary School |
Particularly in upper Dolpa,
due to the remoteness and difficult living conditions, the teachers would not
prefer go there unless they get extra allowances. Schools are also in poor conditions
in terms of infrastructure and other basic facilities. However, there is a hope
for improving the education if it can be provided with some support,
development of infrastructures and other teaching materials.
For the upliftment of the
educational system in particular, the school of Vijer village, Shree Mukporong
Himal Primary School (before Shree Shey Gompa Primary School, established in
the year 2031BS), the founder member Mr. & Mrs. Pritzker and Mr. & Mrs.
Roncoroni family, shows very enthusiastic to provide whatever private support
they can. They decided to support it with infrastructure development, teaching
materials and teachers for the improvement of the school.
They agreed to provide all the funding for the construction of the school and hostel building, teaching material and uniform for the children, private teacher and extra allowances for the government teachers and the basic medical supplies for the betterment of the people and the children.
Restoration of Nesar Gompa
Nesar Gompa |
The Nesar gompa is located in the centre of Vijer VDC. A hidden
library was found by the project team in 1999. It has contains more than six
hundred volume of ancient Tibetan illuminated manuscript dated from 11th
to the 16th century. This library constitutes a cultural history of
Dolpo. For more in details please read the book ‘HIDDEN TREASURER OF THE
HIMALAYAS – Tibetan manuscripts, painting and sculpture of Dolpo’ by Amy
Heller.
The project was executed in
the year 2000 with formal approval of all the villagers and in the guidance of
Lama Tenzin Gyaltsen.
The Gompa was almost ruined
in condition; all the manuscripts were inside the mud wall, not properly placed
and in deteriorating stage. At first, our team took out all the manuscript,
wiped the dust (because it was full of dust with only wooden cover),
measurement and count by page, categorized and catalogue, wraped with new cloths
and finally place in the bookshelf. Secondly, the roof of main gompa was
leaking and first floor of it was not in regular or good height. So we worked
for replacement roof, and gave a standard height and light of the building. In
addition, a new building was constructed for the new library, lama resident,
kitchen and bathroom-toilet with modern facilities.
On the roof of gompa, the guilt
copper deer and wheel of Dharma have been placed by the request of Lama Tenzin
Gyaltsen. Despite, many other works have been done inside the gompa. The gompa
is trapezoid in shape, largest of all in the village, colored with deep red and
white paints which are locally available. The gompa give the impression of
being traditional and an example of cultural preservation.
Introduction
Dunai - Headquater of Dolpo |
Phoksundo Lake |
Dolpa suffers economically,
although it has great potential for tourism. Natural resources would provide
economical benefit if it is exploited in a manageable way.
Dolpo (a.k.a. upper Dolpa), which
was once a province of western Tibet. After the Chinese took over Tibet, Dolpo
is considered as the last enclave of pure Tibetan Culture. Although Dolpo is culturally and
geographically is a world of its own.
Dolpa region of Nepal is rain shadowed by the
Annapurna range blocking off the valuable monsoon rain. The whole of Dolpa is
arid, mountainous and steppe likes terrain. Hence, the fertility of the land in
this mountainous region is very low. Local people totally depend on seasonal
farming, animal husbandry and trade for their livelihood.
